What is the relevance of social research in the age of fake news? What is the role of researchers in a world that considers knowledge “elitist”? This presentation seeks to answer these questions by revisiting the fundamental tenets of social research, examining the conditions that led to its marginalization in contemporary society, and by exploring ways it can meaningfully contribute to the shaping of our future. It suggests a greater emphasis on “searching” in researching to help students better address concerns regarding the purpose of their inquiry, their data-gathering skills, the resources needed, finding informants, and research ethics.
